Be sure to stop by Camp Reynolds to look at the world's oldest standing group of Civil War Buildings. On the island’s East side, ride your bike to Quarry Beach—a beautiful expanse of sunny calm white sand. The paved perimeter road is the five (5) mile bike trail circling the island.

The electric assist feature of a specialized bike makes exploring diverse terrains, such as the hills and trails of Angel Island, more accessible and enjoyable. With the ability to effortlessly conquer challenging landscapes, you can expand your horizons and take on new cycling adventures that might have been daunting on a traditional bike. This enhanced exploration capability is a crucial motivator for investing in your specialized electric bike.

Tram Tours on the Island

Highly recommended for first-time visitors!

Sit back, relax, and enjoy the amazing views offered by the open-air tram tour. While you ride around the island, a history-rich audio recording offers fascinating historical and current-day information about various sites on Angel Island. The Angel Island tram stops at Battery Ledyard, one of the best photo opportunities in the bay area. The backdrop is the entire skyline of San Francisco, Alcatraz, and The Golden Gate Bridge.

Our fleet of open-air trams have a maximum seating capacity of 50 guests. We also have a wheelchair-accessible tram, but please email us prior to your arrival if you need special arrangements at here.

Our tram tour guides are known for their superior customer service.

When booking tickets, please keep in mind that reservations close 48-hours in advance. However, we normally have tickets available for same-day purchase in the Café.

The last stop on our insightful tour is the Immigration Museum Station, where you can enjoy some time exploring by hopping off the tram at that last stop. You can walk back to the Ayala Cove (mild-medium exertion, approximately one mile walk or shorter with the 140 terraced dirt steps directly to the ferry dock), or hop back on a tram/shuttle passing if there is room.

Shuttle pickup times are 12:45PM & 3:00PM, with variance of 5-10 minutes. Please allow plenty of time to make it back to the cove for your departing ferry.

Tram tours, shuttles and online reservations are open! We are also currently accepting private event and group inquiries at this time.

Currently we are running a revised tram tour route due to a small road closure that occurred during the storms of the winter season. You still experience the entire tram tour, and still get to see all the views of the island; just a little different than we had it before!

Facility Details

PERIMETER TRAIL
The perimeter trail offers views of the entire San Francisco Bay along the 5.5mile loop around the island. This the most popular trails on the island and is open to hikers and bikes (rentals available at the island on a first come basis). The route offers a variety of views; on a clear day from San Francisco side of the island near battery Ledyard one can see the Golden Gate bridge, Bay bridge, and Alcatraz from a single vantage point. The road around the island is paved but contains a few major hills as well as rolling hills totaling up to about 350 in total elevation gain. The two steepest hills are Climbing up from Ayala Cove as well as going up to four corners if you travel counter clockwise on the perimeter road or going up to the Nike missile base (steeper) if you travel clockwise. The directions are based on the state park map with the top of the page being north.

MT. LIVERMORE
The peak of Mt. Livermore is 788 feet tall and has views that span all of the island and bay area from it’s top. The name of the peak comes from Caroline Livermore a conservationist who’s efforts in protecting the island led to Angel Island becoming a state park enjoyed by tens of thousands of visitors every year. This is a strenuous hike starting starting at sea level then climbing to the peak (788 feet). There are two routes one following the Sunset trail, from the cove to the peak it is a little over 3 miles and 800 feet of elevation gain. The other route is to follow the North ridge trail to the peak this hike is about 3.5 miles and the same elevation gain but starts with 144 steps going up to the perimeter road. Both of theses trails intersect about a third of a mile from the peak allowing hikers to choose a different route down. This is a difficult hike but rewards hikers with panorama views of the bay. While at the summit there are tables perfect for a picnic prepared to go by the Angel Island café staff.

IMMIGRATION STATION TRAIL
Work up a sweat and learn some fascinating history on a hike to the United States Immigration Station. The hike is slightly strenuous and includes 144 trail stairs beginning and ending in Ayala Cove. Once at the site of the United States Immigration Station, hikers can tour the grounds and outdoor interpretive displays, as well as visit the USIS museum to see the restored detention areas and Chinese poetry engraved on the walls. Hike participants eat lunch at the beach and then head back to the cove. Hike distance is approximately two (2) miles roundtrip.

EXPLORE A PIECE OF HISTORY

The Angel Island Immigration Station Museum & the Angel Island Detention Barracks Museum & World War II Mess Hall are open and waiting to welcome you.

The United States Immigration Station Museum on Angel Island is a beautifully restored structure offering a window into a very important time in the history of Pacific Coast immigrants. The Station, operating from 1910-1940, served as the main immigration processing center for hundreds of thousands of immigrants from all over the world looking to start a new life in America. A direct result of the passage of the Chinese Exclusion Act in 1882, the U.S. Immigration Station detained immigrants while they endured interrogations, medical exams; sometimes for no reason other than their national origin.

Today, the United States Immigration Station serves as a museum dedicated to interpreting and making connections between the experiences of those who made the journey to America over 100 years ago and the continuing story of immigration in America today. The museum is open Wednesday to Sunday for general admission for a fee and is operated by the staff of Angel Island State Park.
